As the young boy gets older, his life begins to deteriorate. In the beginning the 5-year-old boy is a normal child but earns his own money so he can enjoy his childhood activities. As the boy gets older he begins to get into trouble by drinking and stealing. He dropped out of school even though he was top of his class, after he spend a few days with a ‘better off family’ during his hockey trip.Towards the end of the story he becomes an alcoholic, and briefly reconnects with his childhood friend, before being killed in a car accident. The poor boy earns his own money in order to play sports as a child. He plays on the hockey team and creates his own baseball and cricket team. He organizes games against other parts of town. While the other boys in the community played with slingshots and hunted birds or squirrels, â€Å"he hunted the neigh bor’s windows, porch flower pots, and the lights that shone near his street† (8) but he didn’t harm any animals.When the narrator took him to the movies the boy left him to be with other friends. To the surprise of the reader and the narrator he came back to watch the movie with his friend. During the movie the boy admits to the narrator that he snuck into the movie theatre that the narrator’s father owns, without paying. The narrator admits to doing the same thing at the ice rink and a bond forms between them. This is when the boy’s life begins to spiral downwards. As the story develops the boy’s life deteriorates.Even though he was top of the class in school, he had to repeat a year as he lost interest in school and began drinking. When he went on his hockey trip, he was spoiled by â€Å"one of the better families† (31) which showed him of all the things he couldn’t have. This is when he began his drinking on a regular basis. He broke into the theatre, after breaking out of jail, and stole cartoons of cigarettes and boxes of chocolates, and when he returned to the jail, he hid the items in his mattress.The prison is his second home. The reader can only assume he enjoys doing wrong so he can sleep in a real bed for a few nights. Although the young man is trouble in the town and an alcoholic, other teenagers look out for him when he passes out drunk in the snow. The people in the town are relieved that his life came to an end. The â€Å"people said it was for the best† (45) as there wasn’t much further downhill his life could go. Just a few days before the accident, he reconnected with his childhood friend.It’s not till the end of the story that we are given the name of the narrator, Jess. We are given his name while the drunken adult male is threatening to assault him. The very last two sentences in the story leave the reader with several questions. Was he the one driving the car, pos sibly drunk? Did a car hit him? Was he just a passenger in the collision? Some people also refer to the mass media as the â€Å"mainstream media,† referencing the fact that it tends to stick to prominent stories which will be of interest to a general audience, sometimes ignoring controversial breaking news. Many people around the world rely on the mass media for news and entertainment, and globally, mass media is a huge industry. Usually, mass media aims to reach a very large market, such as the entire population of a country. By contrast, local media covers a much smaller population and area, focusing on regional news of interest, while specialty media is provided for particular demographic groups. The advantage of running operation in mass media is that one can set up a platform of medium to disseminate favorable message. The advantage of attacking mass media is that one can build up his/her reputation for being less biased and more objective. The advantage of co-operating with mass media is that one can ease the worries of being â€Å"black mouthed† by media organizations. The advantage of buying corporate engaged in mass media is that one can get a big asset for negotiation with political parties and the government. Disadvantages of mass media Well I believe it comes down to the parents or guardians to begin with. Of course younger generations shouldn’t be watching as much TV if at all. Most of the primetime shows and stations are becoming more and more passive on what not to show. Having younger children subjected to nudity, cursing, sexual immorality, drinking and other negative adult oriented material is of course unsuitable, heck even unsuitable for adults at times. If the parents let their children watch inappropriate shows on TV I’m sure studies have shown the likelihood of these children being involved in such problems later on in life.

The Unjustified War on Iraq The Bush Administration was impatiently unjustified in the attack on Iraq. The justification the Republican council offered was no more that an attempt to eradicate the blame infused by poorly made, hasty decisions and forceful actions. Liberal magazine, The Nation, publishes many liberal perspectives on the actions that have been taken in prevention of major military action. Although action was necessary, the use of military force by the United States was excessive. Iraq’s militant leader, Saddam Hussein, has been a sore in foreign relations for the United States since the 1980s. However, the United Nation’s demand for Iraqi military disarmament slowly, but effectively reduced the strength of this†¦show more content†¦(The Editors) The reasons for nonmilitary actions far outweigh those proposed by the Administration in their justification to attack Iraq. Attacking Iraq was not only not supported by the UN, but harmful to the Iraqi citizens who have been oppressed enough by militant dictators who have suppressed their rights as people. Columnist Jeremy Scahill, for The Nation, wrote the emotion provoking article illustrating the effects of US military bombing on civilians living in nearby areas; the Fartus family told of their,â€Å"oldest son, 6-year-old Heider, [being] killed by a US missile as he played in front of his home. His brother, Mustafa, lost two fingers in the attack and lives with shrapnel in his back† (Scahill). It’s images like these illustrating the detrimental effect US military action brings to a country simply looking for the time and way to change. The Bush Administration says the time to act is now. With giving the Saddam regime more time, we are allowing them to build their infrastructure putting at risk our national security and hindering the spread of democracy and freedom in the Arab world.
